Cognitive Assessments for Children and Adolescents

(including Giftedness)

Understand Your Child’s Learning Profile and Intellectual Strengths

What is a Cognitive Assessment?

A cognitive assessment evaluates how a child thinks, learns, and processes information.

At Eastside Psychology Clinic, cognitive assessments are used to:

  • Identify intellectual strengths and weaknesses
  • Assess for giftedness or high intellectual ability
  • Understand uneven cognitive profiles
  • Inform school planning and extension or support needs
  • Provide clarity where there are questions about learning or development

Assessments are comprehensive, individualised, and tailored to each child.

Who is This For?

A cognitive assessment may be helpful if your child:

  • Appears advanced for their age or highly capable
  • Finishes work quickly or seems under-challenged at school
  • Shows uneven abilities (e.g., strong verbally but struggles in other areas)
  • Has been described as “gifted” or “bright but inconsistent”
  • Is being considered for extension programs or selective schooling
  • Has complex learning or developmental patterns

    Giftedness and High Intellectual Ability

Cognitive assessments can identify giftedness and high intellectual ability, as well as more complex profiles.

    This may include:

    • Advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills
    • Strong verbal or abstract thinking abilities
    • Uneven development across cognitive areas
    • “Twice-exceptional” profiles (e.g., giftedness alongside ADHD or learning difficulties)

Understanding these patterns can help guide appropriate educational pathways and support.

    What Does the Assessment Involve?

Assessments are conducted using evidence-based, standardised tools and include:

    1) Clinical Interview

Discussion of developmental history, learning profile, and current concerns

    2) Cognitive Testing

Assessment of intellectual functioning across areas such as:

    • verbal comprehension
    • visual reasoning
    • working memory
    • processing speed

    3) Questionnaires (where appropriate)

    Input from parents and/or teachers

    4) Comprehensive Report

Detailed written report outlining results, interpretation, and recommendations

    5) Feedback Session

    6) Clear explanation of findings and guidance on next steps

    What You Will Receive

Following the assessment, you will receive:

    • A comprehensive written report
    • A clear profile of strengths and areas of difficulty
    • Identification of giftedness (where applicable)
    • Recommendations for school and home support
    • Guidance regarding extension, enrichment, or further assessment
    • Documentation suitable for schools and other professionals

      Related Assessments

If there are concerns about academic performance, a learning disorder assessment may also be recommended.

      This can assess for:

      • dyslexia
      • dysgraphia
      • dyscalculia

In some cases, a combined cognitive and academic assessment may provide the most comprehensive understanding.

      Fees

Fees vary depending on the complexity of the assessment. As a guide, a cognitive assessment (including giftedness) ranges between $2,000 – $2,400. A clear quote will be provided prior to commencement.
